Factors to Keep in Mind When Designing a New Kitchen

Kitchens function as the central hub of a home. Today, homeowners do more than just cook, bake and eat in their kitchen. In a 2017 Houzz poll, 60% said they spend 3+ hours in their updated kitchen per day entertaining, socializing, doing work, and/or watching television. That's a lot of time! Sowhy not have a place you spend so much time suit your lifestyle and needs? Space, functionality and technology are a fewkey factors designers and homeowners keep in mind when creating their dream kitchen.

Space

Are you considering a kitchen renovation, but aren't sure if you have "the space"? While your current kitchen may feel small and cramped, that doesn't mean that the same space can't be designed in a new way as to maximize the use of the space. In the same Houzz study, 64% of homeowners didn't change the size of their kitchen when renovating, they just increased the storage which in turn, can give the illusion of more space. In many of our kitchens, we utilize custom cabinetry as well as other techniques to create more hidden storage and to make items easier to find. While opening up the space isn't always necessary, knocking down walls and creating an open floor plan is another tactic used to create more space for a kitchen.

Functionality

In a 2017 Houzz Inc. poll, they found that 93% of kitchen and bath renovators find improving the design and look and feel of their space to be very important, but right behind that at 87% of homeowners believe that improving functionality is very important. In a kitchen, particularly when cooking, a way to increase functionality is to create a design that allows the homeowner to move without any constraints and extend their reach. Countertops, storage options, and appliances should all work together to create flow, continuity and organization that makes tasks most efficient for the homeowner.

Technology

Every year, new high-tech appliances are added to the market whether it be a refrigerator that include a Keurig, a home wine tap station or an under counter greenhouse. Homeowners like to check out the latest-and-greatest in appliance and high-efficiency systems when designing or renovating a kitchen.Like we stated above, a kitchen is no longer just for cooking and eating, so technology like televisions, tablets and computers may be used in the kitchen, too.
